On 1st July of 1964 Department of Pharmacy started operating under the Faculty of Science in the University of Dhaka. Professor Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed was the first chairman of the Department of Pharmacy. The Department of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka started Pharmacy education with a 3-years Bachelor of Pharmacy. Later on, complying the demands of the students the degree was converted to Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons). The 1st batch of students graduated in 1967. In 1969,  one-year Masters in Pharmacy (M. Pharm.) course was initiated for all the graduate students under 2 groups: Thesis and Non-Thesis. In 1995 Faculty of Pharmacy comes out. Professor Dr. Nurun Nahar Rahman was appointed as the first acting Dean of the Faculty. That time the pharmacy programs came under the Faculty of Pharmacy. From 1996 the 3 year B. Pharm. (Honors) program was upgraded to 4 year (Honors) program.   As  per decision of the syndicate meeting of the University of Dhaka dated 01.04.2003 the 4-year B. Pharma (Honors) programs and all the students were taken under the Faculty of Pharmacy abolishing the Department of Pharmacy. Then a wirt petition was served on Demand of Justice Notice dated 19.06.2005 upon Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of the University of Dhaka.  There after the High Court passed an order dated 07.03.2012 (certified copy received on 29.04.2014) on writ petirion no. 4378 of 2005 as the Judgement and order passed by the High Court which was taken as effective, reviving the Department of Pharmacy activities as it was before abolishing. Upon this judgement and order, the Syndicate of the University of Dhaka took decision on 25.05.2014 and appointed a Chairman of the Department on 28.05.2014 which was circulated by a memo on 01.06.2014.  Now Bachelor of Pharmacy is 5-years program. At present, the Department of Pharmacy offers undergraduate course to 70 students each year.

 

In 2014 the Department completed its 50 years of service. Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, Dean of Faculty as Convener of the organizing committee requested Dr. Sitesh C Bachar, Member Secretary, to inform everybody about the steps taken till-to-date for organizing the Golden Jubilee celebration of Pharmacy Education. Dr. Sitesh informed that as per departmental academic committee meeting on the agenda of Golden Jubilee Celebration of Pharmacy Department held on 7 December 2014, a decision was taken to celebrate as “Golden Jubilee Celebration of Pharmacy Education”. Dr. Sitesh informed all the participants attended the meeting that academic committee of the Department has taken a decision to celebrate the occasion on 26 December 2014. Because of short time then suitable date were found on 23 & 24 or 30 & 31 January 2015 for celebrating the occasion for two days. At last the program was held on 20 & 21 November 2015. Above 1000 Ex & Current Students participated in the program. Mr. Tofail Ahmed, the Honorable Minister of Commerce, GoB was the chief guest of this program. Income of this program was from Donation, Sponsor, Advertisement and Registration fees. Expenses are mainly for meetings, distribution of information, purchase of Jacket, Food & Decoration and Cultural program.

 

In a meeting of organizing committee of 'Dhaka University Golden Jubilee of Pharmacy Education' a decision has been taken by creating a convening committee which consist of  seven members including Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy and Chairman of Department of Pharmacy who have been made as Convener and Member Secretary respectively for establishing a program named 'Dhaka University Pharmacy Alumni Association (DUPAA)'. Where Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy is the President and Chairman, Department of Pharmacy is the Secretary General of DUPAA. And every year the secretary General will be replaced by another departmental chairman uner the Faculty of Pharmacy on a rotation basis. No departmental chairman will be able to hold the position of Secretary General for consecutive two years or more.
